LMS for a small team

A full LMS is dozens of features, most of which a small team never needs. In Skillok the learning side is built from a few things — challenges with automatic checking, materials with history, and assignments with review. Here is exactly what there is, so you can decide whether it is enough.

Challenges#

The unit of learning is a challenge: a folder in a repository with stages in order. A stage is text with formulas, code and diagrams, plus a check:

  • questions — single or multiple choice, typed answer, ordering, matching, fill in the blanks, flashcards;
  • a hands-on task — the required file exists, it has the required sections and the right number;
  • code in Python or JavaScript — tests run in a sandbox after git push or after saving on the site.

The learner goes through the stages and sees their own progress; questions come back to them for review on a schedule — the idea behind it is explained in spaced repetition. Stages earn experience points and achievements.

Materials and assignments#

Lectures, notes and handouts live in repositories — with an edit history and access by team. Practical work is handed in as an issue or a pull request, and the reviewer writes a review.

What is missing#

  • a gradebook and summary reports on learners;
  • assigning challenges to groups with deadlines;
  • SCORM, webinars, video calls, an interactive whiteboard;
  • email notifications.

Who it suits#

A team, a small school or a study club where the teacher already knows every participant, and what you need from the platform is a place for materials, assignments, and automatic checking of routine answers. If you need reporting on hundreds of learners, choose a specialized LMS. For company onboarding, see the employee training platform page.

What it costs#

Challenges you build by hand, taking them, repositories and issues — all free.

Jira alternative Jira can do almost anything, and that is exactly why small teams often dislike it — too many settings for a simple "what are we doing, who is doing it, what is done". In Skillok issues and boards are simpler, modelled on GitHub, and they live next to your code and documents. GitHub alternative Skillok is built like GitHub and repeats the familiar parts — repository, commits, branches, issues, pull requests, projects, organizations. The interface is available in English and Russian. Below is an honest list of what already works, what does not yet, and how to move your code in a few minutes. GitLab alternative If you use GitLab for repositories, issues and code review, and do not want to maintain a server, Skillok covers that part. If you live in GitLab CI and the package registry — honestly, that is not us yet. Here is what matches and what does not. Platform for tutors A lesson lasts an hour, but learning goes on all week. Skillok covers the time between lessons — materials, homework, checking, and a history of the student's progress. To be clear from the start: there is no interactive whiteboard or video calling, so run the lesson itself in the tool you already use. Create your own online course If you have something to explain and want to build a course rather than a sales page, you can start for free. A course on Skillok is a challenge in a repository: stages in order, each with its own check, and the materials themselves are ordinary files with an edit history. Employee training platform A classic corporate LMS means courses, assignments, reports and certificates. Skillok covers part of that in a different way — through a repository of materials, issues as assignments, and challenges with automatic checking. If you need reports on every employee and SCORM compatibility, we will say it right away — those are not here.
